“What do I want to do? What am I good at? Can I choose other careers to follow?” These are some of the questions you start to ask yourself when you go to high school. Most students don’t know what they want to do, or what are they good at, when they reach or even end high school. Because of that, some choose to do a thing called Gap Year.
What is Gap Year?
You might be asking what a Gap Year is.
So, a Gap Year is a period (that typically lasts a year) in which you stop your studies, mostly between high school and college, to find your vocation or just to take time to think what you would really like to do in the future.
There are various types of gap year: you can take this period to travel and know different cultures and get some inspiration; you can try working or volunteering abroad; you can find an easy job just to save some money; take more time to study for exams; experience what is like to work in the area you are studying and more.
What would be the best gap year for me?
If you have no clue what you want to do, you might want to try working in multiple small jobs and get some idea of what’s out there.
Or if you feel adventurous and would like to experience what is like to live in a different environment, you should try to travel. I´m sure you will meet cool new people, and maybe get inspired by other cultures.
But if you already planned your future and decided which college you want to apply, you might consider spending a year studying for the exams. With this, you take time to prepare yourself and don´t feel so pressured.
My personal choice was the third one, but I also want to get a job in the extra time, so I could get more experience and save some money to myself.
If you are considering taking a gap year as me, best of luck with your decision and remember: NO REGRETS!
